All about fashion - Basics first

What is fashion and why study it? Something that all fashion students should know!

 What is Fashion?

Fashion is a statement of “trends” followed by the majority or the representative set of the society at any given period of time. It is a “style” or a statement created by the designer and adopted by the consumer who in today’s world wants to think and look fashionable. Various elements and principles of Design like color, value, line, texture, silhouette, etc along with the intensive knowledge of textiles, merchandising, manufacturing and retail contributes to this very wide field. Therefore, fashion is not only about clothes, it’s about adapting to a rapidly changing and an extremely dynamic character to help develop your own personality and your surroundings.

Structure ( The whole nine yards)

Fashion designers can work in a number of ways. They may work full-time for one Fashion Company, known as in-house designers, which owns the designs. They may work alone or as part of a team. Freelance designers work for themselves, and sell their designs to fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing manufacturers. The garments bear the buyers label. Some fashion designers set up their own labels, under which their designs are marketed. Some fashion designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. Other high-fashion designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. Most fashion designers, however, work for apparel manufacturers, creating designs of men’s, women’s, and children’s fashions for the mass market. Large designer brands which have a 'name' as their brand such as Calvin Klein, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, or Channel are likely to be designed by a team of individual designers under the direction of a designer director.

Designing a Collection
A fashion collection is something that designers put together each season to show their idea of new trends in both their high end couture range as well as their mass market range.

Designing a Garment
Fashion designers work in different ways. Some sketch their ideas on paper, while others drape fabric on a dress form. When a designer is completely satisfied with the fit of the toile (or muslin), he or she will consult a professional pattern maker who

then makes the finished, working version of the pattern out of card. The pattern maker's job is very precise and painstaking. The fit of the finished garment depends on their accuracy. Finally, a sample garment is made up and tested on a model.

Why study fashion design? (the big question aye!)

Fashion design is one of the most exhilarating, challenging and rewarding design fields to study today. With the development in communications technology the fashion industry is expanding and becoming one of the leading design fields in the global market. Enter the world of fast paced fashion by learning how to design and construct fashion garments.

What makes a good fashion designer?

It goes without saying that fashion designers are creative, but as no two people are alike, there are no specific “kinds” of people that make good fashion designers. What fashion designers do share is an endless drive and passion for fashion.

A good fashion designer:
• is able to communicate design ideas via drawings, design presentations, technical drawings etc.,
• is flexible in his/ her design abilities and can design anything from accessories to menswear for a broad customer base,
• is an expert pattern maker and can manipulate the fit and proportions of clothing,
• is a master in couture sewing techniques and understands production methods,
• understands their clientele, their lifestyle, their expectations from brands and their clothing needs,
• has business acumen,
• understands financial constraints,
• keeps up to date with current trends and developments in technology not just in fashion but in all industries.
